Strategic Purpose

The New Zealand Diploma in Aviation (Level 6) with a strand in Flight Instruction prepares students to become qualified flight instructors. The programme is suitable for both those looking to gain their Commercial Pilot Licence and those who already hold one. It develops the instructional, theoretical, and practical flying skills required to teach aspiring pilots to CAANZ standards.

Graduate Profile

Graduates of this programme will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of CAANZ CPL theory subjects, including air law, navigation, meteorology, human factors, principles of flight, and aircraft technical knowledge
  • Deliver effective ground and in-flight instruction to the standard of a Category C Flight Instructor (Aeroplane)
  • Communicate aviation concepts clearly and confidently, enhancing student learning and operational safety
  • Structure flight training programmes, conduct pre-flight briefings and debriefings, and monitor student performance
Educational Pathways

This programme follows on from the NZ Diploma in Aviation (Level 5) and can also stand alone for qualified pilots. It provides a foundation for further study in aviation education, flight operations, or airline preparation programmes.

Employment Pathways

Graduates will be qualified to work as certified Category C Flight Instructors under Civil Aviation Rules. Instructional roles offer a pathway to build flight hours, gain mentoring experience, and support the development of new pilots. The skills gained also support progression into operations management, airline preparation, and aviation education roles.

Entry Requirements
  • For those working toward a CPL: enrolment in the full diploma pathway, including Level 5 and Level 6 components
  • For current licence holders: completion of the NZ Diploma in Aviation (Level 5) or equivalent, plus a current CPL (Aeroplane)
  • All applicants must meet CAANZ Part 61 Subpart E requirements, including Class 1 Medical and Fit and Proper Person criteria
