Welcome to Otago Aviation Academy (OAA)

We are delighted to welcome international students to Otago Aviation Academy, where your aviation journey begins. Based in the breathtaking region of Wanaka, New Zealand, OAA offers a world-class flight training environment shaped by alpine terrain, dynamic weather, and real-world flying scenarios. Our goal is to provide internationally recognised training and personalised support to help you succeed in aviation and life in New Zealand.


Programmes Available

We offer two full-time programmes approved for international students:


Entry Requirements

  • Age: You must be at least 18 years old by the first day of the course
  • English Proficiency: Minimum IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) across all bands
  • Medical: A CAA NZ Class 1 Medical Certificate is required. This can be completed in New Zealand or through an approved overseas aviation medical examiner
  • Insurance: You must hold valid travel and medical insurance covering aviation training for the entire duration of your stay in New Zealand.
  • Visa: You must obtain a valid New Zealand Student Visa

Visa Requirements

To study in New Zealand, you must apply for a student visa through Immigration New Zealand. Your visa application will require:

  • A valid offer of place from OAA
  • Evidence of tuition payment
  • Proof of living expenses
  • Approved insurance cover

If your visa is declined, all tuition fees paid will be refunded in full.


Living Expenses

You must demonstrate access to sufficient funds as part of your visa application. Immigration New Zealand requires proof of:

  • At least NZ$20,000 for the first year, or
  • NZ$1,667 per month for courses shorter than 12 months

Accommodation

OAA offers assistance in arranging accommodation for your arrival and initial stay. Options include:

  • Homestays with local families
  • Self-contained units or cabins in local holiday parks
  • Local motels and private rentals

Orientation and Arrival Support

  • We provide airport pickup from Queenstown Airport
  • Orientation includes:
    • Course structure and expectations
    • Health and safety briefing
    • Introduction to key staff and support services
    • Guidance on settling into life in New Zealand

Driving in New Zealand

If you plan to drive while studying, you’ll need a valid New Zealand or recognised international driver’s licence. Learn more at the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA).


Insurance Requirements

All international students must have comprehensive travel and medical insurance for the full duration of their stay. Your policy must cover aviation training and emergency repatriation.
