Preparing for Your Pilot Training at Otago Aviation Academy

Otago Aviation Academy is committed to supporting you throughout your training journey. Whether you are working toward your first licence or aiming for a career in aviation, our programmes offer high-quality instruction, practical experience, and a strong focus on safety. Training is delivered from our base in the Southern Lakes region, giving students valuable exposure to New Zealand’s varied flying conditions.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements vary depending on the course. In general, students must:

• You must be at least 18 years old by the first day of the course
• Pass an aviation aptitude assessment covering basic maths, logic, and spatial awareness
• Hold a current CAA Class 1 Medical Certificate for commercial training, or Class 2 for PPL
• Meet the Civil Aviation Authority’s Fit and Proper Person criteria
• Demonstrate English language proficiency if English is not your first language

Training Environment

Training takes place at Wanaka Airport, where students benefit from:

• Exposure to alpine terrain and dynamic weather conditions
• Experience operating in both controlled and uncontrolled airspace

Course Delivery

Student Support

Otago Aviation Academy provides a professional and supportive learning environment. Students have access to:

• Ongoing support from the Training Manager and instructors

• Help with accommodation, budgeting, or wellbeing matters if needed
• Career guidance for those seeking employment in aviation

Uniform and Equipment

Students must wear the approved pilot training uniform during all flight and classroom sessions. A uniform list is provided upon enrolment. Required training materials and logbooks can be purchased through the academy or approved suppliers.

Accommodation and Transport

While OAA does not provide on-site accommodation, staff can assist with advice on local housing options in Wanaka. Most students live within a short distance from the airport. Transport is the responsibility of each student.
