Strategic Purpose

The New Zealand Diploma in Aviation (Level 5) with strands in Aeroplane prepares students for commercial flight operations in general aviation. Based in Wanaka, the programme offers a unique training environment with complex terrain, varied weather, and controlled airspace. The curriculum meets all New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) requirements, combining theory and flight training for real-world readiness.

Graduate Profile

Graduates of OAA’s Level 5 Diploma will be fully equipped to:

• Complete CAANZ theory and flight testing for PPL, CPL, and Single/Multi‑Engine Instrument Ratings
• Safely operate single and multi‑engine aeroplanes across diverse environments
• Plan and manage flights, including navigation, fuel calculations, and risk assessment
• Comply with New Zealand CAA regulations and maintain a robust safety mindset
• Communicate effectively with air traffic, crew, and passengers
• Develop strong situational awareness, decision-making, and emergency response skills

Educational Pathways

Graduates may continue to advanced aviation qualifications, including the New Zealand Diploma in Aviation (Level 6), or transition into aviation-related tertiary study such as aviation management or safety systems.

Employment Pathways

Graduates will be ready for entry-level roles in general aviation, including scenic flights, charter services, air taxi operations, aerial survey, and air ambulance work. Training in the alpine conditions of Wanaka gives graduates strong situational awareness and practical flying skills.

Students may also move into flight operations and planning roles, or pursue a Category C Flight Instructor rating to gain experience and build flight hours. Further study options include Level 6 diplomas in flight instruction or airline preparation.

Entry Requirements

Minimum Age:
Candidates must be at least 18 years old at the time of application.

Aptitude Test:
All applicants must successfully complete an aviation aptitude assessment covering numerical reasoning, spatial orientation, and problem-solving skills.

Fit and Proper Person Test:
Applicants must meet the Civil Aviation Authority’s Fit and Proper Person requirements, including a background and character check.

Medical Examination:
A current CAA Class 1 Medical Certificate is required prior to commencement of flight training. This confirms the applicant’s medical fitness for commercial aviation duties.

English Language Proficiency:
All applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

• Education: At least two years of secondary education in an institution where English is the primary language of instruction.
• Employment: A minimum of three years of employment in an English-speaking environment, which helps ensure practical language proficiency in professional settings.
• Aviation English Language Proficiency Test: Candidates must pass this test to demonstrate their ability to understand and communicate aviation-specific information and instructions in English. This test assesses both the general and aviation-related language abilities.
